Sorry Abby, but I'm all in on the Kate Discourse. It's so OBVIOUS that the British Press was told to keep quiet and keep away. No little stories about how the kids are "stepping up to help mom"? No paps in Bucklebury to snap pics of the Middletons (and no pics of her parents or Pippa visiting Kate in the hospital)? Especially compared to how visible Charles and Camilla were around his own surgery and recovery.

Not everyone is a Meghan fan (and I do understand some of the criticism) but it's clear the Royal Family put in the effort for Kate that they were unwilling to do for Meghan. And because (IMO) they were so vague (and all the William weirdness at the same time) it is going to be that much more scrutiny for Kate when she does return.

Not sure why I’m getting an attack here…I didn’t make any comparisons to Meghan coverage in the press and a cursory glance of everything I’ve ever written would show how much I loved Meg and Harry. This is what I’m saying about the toxicity of the conversations and honestly a huge reason why this lifelong royals follower (who knows well more than the average person on the internet) stopped paying as close attention. And stopped writing about it so much here. I went back and forth about mentioning it at all and am now regretting it. Even though I was extremely fair and measured and didn’t make it about Meghan AT ALL, other than to compare that Kate would never give an interview about this. Which is true and not a slight at Meghan.

Abby, I’m sorry if you thought I was attacking you! I meant to make a point that the press wasn’t doing its usual thing with filling its pages with any Royal tidbits, and thus arousing suspicions across the internet. That they are being hands off now means they could have been hands off back then as well. And the comparison being how forward Charles and Camilla were being made it a bit more pointed.

I also didn’t think you were anti Meghan, and that’s why I said I can understand some of the criticism they get, because I do. I don’t read Puck so I don’t know her writing style, but did find Lauren’s “Duchess of Sussex or whatever” comment to be indicative of a certain media… impression?

As I said in another comment I made elsewhere ;) I love media analysis, it’s more interesting to me than the actual gossip. I’m sure this will be studied by crisis PR firms for years to come.

It's tough to read it otherwise when a sentence starts with "Abby I'm sorry but...it's OBVIOUS"...though thanks for clarifying :)

I very specifically didn't get into all the British media coverage details because the conversations always devolve and I'm no longer interested in being a part of that wildly unproductive narrative. Not because I'm unaware of what is going on. Believe me, I've been in the trenches. I wrote about the royal family for YEARS at Glamour, along with intense amounts of coverage here and commentary on my socials. I've had the trolls all over me on Twitter multiple times for supporting Meghan or not being "awful" enough to Kate, as if that is a thing one should strive to be in general.

The truth is it's actually *quite* possible to talk about one of these women without it being about the other. The same way one can talk about Taylor and not always have to bring up Beyoncé, and vice versa. That's what I was trying to do in the way I wanted to talk about a huge internet/pop culture conversation that bubbled outside royal watchers.

I also simply linked to Lauren's post and said there was interesting stuff there, which there is—and it's not about Kate's current situation in *any* way. Your original comment never mentioned Lauren at all, so I'm not even sure what she had to do with what you said initially. She's a fashion journalist. I wouldn't take a pithy comment about confusion over what people are calling Meghan (which, um, fair for loads of people) as indicative of her enforcing some larger media narrative that you see. We don't have to read into everything all the time. She was just making a joke.
