Dear Grey's Anatomy...
Can we talk for a sec in the on-call room? I have some suggestions for next season.
Dear Grey’s1,
You are one of my longest running relationships. I fell hard and fast for you the moment you appeared on ABC as a midseason replacement in March 2005. It was blissful. Like any good Scorpio, I love you with deep passion and tremendous loyalty, perhaps even to a fault at times2. (And yeah, yeah, yeah save your “Grey’s Anatomy is still on?” jokes. Us lifers have heard them all and they’re not original 😉.)
I have never left you. I will never leave you. I am the most ride or die—through way too many onscreen deaths to count. You’ve ripped my heart out a thousand times…and I liked it.
Those Lifetime reruns years ago sustained me through some of my darkest days. When I was at the most unimaginable depths of grief and could barely get through an episode of anything, you were there and I’ll be forever grateful3. It was like I wanted to feel sadness and pain, but wasn’t ready to truly face my own. So I transferred it onto characters and episodes I’d watched a million times already. If I could anticipate the tears and know how everything was going to work out (or not), it was manageable…unlike the vastness of what else I was feeling (or trying not to).
That’s no small thing, show.
Thankfully, I’ve been able to mostly forget the lean years. I’ve generally Eternal Sunshine-d that musical episode from my brain, which is best for all involved. And we all know there were some terrible seasons when many abandoned ship. I get why they did. But it couldn’t be me.
That said, you can be truly honest with the ones you love the most right?
This season has been…uneven, but not without good things. Let’s rundown my notes for the future shall we? Because of course Grey’s Anatomy will be back for S20. (There will be spoilers for the season that just wrapped…and obvs those that have come before.)
