Also, can we stop with the Superb Owl jokes? It was funny the first few times, but that time has passed.

Because I'm Old, I had no idea who Dawes is and immediately Googled Randy Newman to make sure he was still alive (he is). I get having younger artists (and loved the whole show) but not even a mention of Randy was weird to me, like: "as relevant today as it was in 1983 when Randy Newman sang it..." or is that cheesy? I am anti chewing gum forever, but particularly at award shows. Just use a mint!

It's hard for me to square the Marc Jacobs who shows the clothe he does, styled the way he does, with the Marc Jacobs of The Tote Bag, The Mini Bag and yes, The Wallet. Get that money before the teens move on, but so boring and basic.

I'm such a Gen X I remember Battle of the Network Stars, it's how I first heard of Pepperdine University!

Dawes isn't exactly young people music by any stretch! Nor is anyone's in that backing band. But they are a smaller indie folk rock group which is why I love the exposure they've been getting. Taylor is an OG Joni Jammer and they also played with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash at FireAid. They carry on the Laurel Canyon sonic legacy so well! And they were super affected by the Altadena fire, which adds another emotional layer.

I don't remember exactly how Trevor introduced them re: saying Randy's name or not, but he signed off on the lyric changes and was mentioned in every bit of press around the opener, whether directly from the musicians who performed or just general coverage. I don't think anyone was trying to obscure that at ALL. It was also a bit of a surprise as to what was going to open the show.

As for Marc, those are two totally separate entities and every designer and/or house has a version of super commercial stuff vs. the art on the runway, etc. That's a tale as old as time.

And yes, I realize people hate chewing gum on stage, hence the running bit about my short list of people I allow ;)
